Fitness equipment

The manufacturers of fitness equipment can make all kinds of promises, but the Federal Trade Commission offers some tips on how to be safe when buying them. They include:

• Ignore the claims that an exercise machine or device can provide you with easy, long-lasting results in a short period of time. This is false. You should not expect to get the benefits of exercise if you do not exercise.

• Accept claims that fitness equipment can burn fat from a certain area of the body with a grain of salt. Achieving a major change in the appearance of a single part of your body requires well-rounded exercise that works the whole body.

• Be skeptical of testimonials and “Before & After” pictures. Although the fitness equipment may have helped one person achieve his or her desired results, this does not mean that it will work for all people, or even most people, in the same way.

• Consider the total cost. Often fitness equipment is advertised and sold in installments. Remember that three “easy” payments of $49.95 is still $150. You need to consider if the fitness equipment is really worth that much.

• If you are going to spend money on fitness equipment, you will have better results if you invest in sports that you are interested in. If you like to windsurf, invest
